2022 'Chicxulub' Raw Puerh Tea

This tea is comprised of carefully selected huangpian (yellow-flake) raw puerh tea material grown and harvested from old-growth trees in Yunnan.

Huangpian are the older - usually fourth or fifth - leaves on the stem that, after processing, are deemed to be less visually appealing, and are then usually hand-separated from the rest of the production. Brewed on their own, huangpian offer a distinctly mellow profile, with more sweetness, low astringency, and noticeably less caffeine.

As a tea material in its own right, huangpian was historically less valued than ‘full’ (read: visually consistent) tea leaves in the domestic Chinese market. It was sorted out of productions and often kept by producers for personal drinking. These days, huangpian is considered its own specialised type of tea, particularly when the leaves are grown and sorted out of high-quality tea materials to begin with. In short, drinking huangpian sourced from old-tree productions can be affordable way to taste a typically expensive tea without the hefty price tag.

All things said, 'Chicxulub' is a fantastic candidate for those who haven't tried many high-end raw puerh teas, or for those interested in adding unique teas to their collection for immediate enjoyment and/or long-term storing and ageing. As to be expected with premium, old-arbour raw puerh tea, the material here is soft, supple, and sweet.

A pleasant and high-value introduction to what can otherwise quickly become a financially costly tea habit.

  • Use boiling water (100C).

We recommend using approx 1g of tea per 15ml of water for gongfu-style brewing in a teapot or gaiwan. Rinse the leaves once and then brew as usual. You can re-steep the leaves several times until there's no flavour left.

For Western-style brewing in a larger teapot, use approx 5g tea per 100ml of water. You can re-brew the leaves a few times.

To brew direct in a mug, use 1-2g of tea in the bottom of the cup, fill to top with boiling water, and drink once cool. Re-fill the cup with more water when you've drunk 1/3rd of the tea. Repeat until there's no more flavour left.

  • All of our teas are suitable for long-term storage and ageing.

Keep your tea away from sunlight and strong smells, and somewhere with stable climate conditions.

You can keep it sealed inside the re-usable bag the tea comes in, or another non-porous container.
