2024 'Taiwan-wei' Dian Hong Black Tea

This Yunnan black tea was made by a Taiwanese tea master who has been producing teas including puer, oolong, and other teas across Yunnan and Taiwan for over 30 and 50 years respectively.

As soon as hot water hits the leaves, this tea releases an unmistakable ‘Taiwan Wei’ (wèi 味) or Taiwanese-style fragrance — strongly sweet, floral, and fruity. The first sip however, reveals the Yunnan large-leaf assamica (Dà Yè Zhǒng 大叶种) base material, characterised by a thick body (kǒugǎn 口感) and mouthfeel, and plenty of returning sweetness (huígān 回甘). This tea can be steeped many times, with each steep as strong as the last, uniquely fruity fragrance persisting throughout.

For us, this tea embodies a perfect marriage of Yunnan material and skilled hand processing by the Taiwanese maker. In other words, imagine a Taiwanese black tea with the body of raw puer, or a Dian Hong with the intense delicate fragrance of a Fujianese or Taiwanese black tea.

  • Use boiling water (100C).

We recommend using approx 1g of tea per 15ml of water for gongfu-style brewing in a teapot or gaiwan. Rinse the leaves once and then brew as usual. You can re-steep the leaves several times until there's no flavour left.

For Western-style brewing in a larger teapot, use approx 5g tea per 100ml of water. You can re-brew the leaves a few times.

To brew direct in a mug, use 1-2g of tea in the bottom of the cup, fill to top with boiling water, and drink once cool. Re-fill the cup with more water when you've drunk 1/3rd of the tea. Repeat until there's no more flavour left.

  • All of our teas are suitable for long-term storage and ageing.

Keep your tea away from sunlight and strong smells, and somewhere with stable climate conditions.

You can keep it sealed inside the re-usable bag the tea comes in, or another non-porous container.
