This tea comes from a secret garden on the very famous Lao Banzhang Bingdao Old Village, located on Guafengzhai Bohetang mountain, from the region of Mansong, Yiwu, in Xigui county, Bulang, Yunnan, China. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e The trees are over 100 metres tall and only picked once every millenium. No pesticides have ever been within a 50 kilometre radius of the trees. One, it comes from old trees, two, trees in a famous place, and three, there's very little of it. The price of this tea is determined by the domestic puerh tea drinking market in China, which is much larger, and has a lot more money in it, than the Western market.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAlso, you might assume that this is just marked up a huge amount, but we would make more money if someone bought the equivalent value of any other tea we have.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe final note is that, scarily, this isn't even remotely close to the actual top-end of fresh raw puerh tea. There are plenty of teas from particular villages that'd easily cost 10 times more. Also the way the puerh market is heading, it'll likely cost a lot more in five year's time to make this same tea (given the date of writing at 2019). \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIs it worth it?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eNot really. It's just barely worth it to us, but this tea has particular qualities that aren't common, so we couldn't resist. Higher-end teas like this are a good example of diminishing returns. This tea costs 3.6x what \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/kuura.co\/products\/2019-dethflow-raw-puer?variant=20438801776702\"\u003e2019 'Dethflow' Raw Puerh Tea\u003c\/a\u003e does, and in our opinion, it's not 3.6x as good. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhat does the tea taste like?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eAt risk of sounding like an elitist wanker, what makes this tea so good to us personally might not even be relevant to you if you don't drink a tonne of raw puerh already. It's hard to give a tasting note or description that would communicate the experience of a tea like this. It's just really very enjoyable to drink. The flavour is also just one part of it; the body feeling is another.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhy the lack of info on this tea, and all your other teas?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eThis is a topic of much debate, and we could discuss it at length. In short, for a tea like this, even if we said 'this tea comes from xxxx place' and tried to prove it with pictures or other documentation, ultimately, you can never be sure. Anyone can show up in Yunnan, visit some impressive looking trees, and take some photos. It is 100% impossible to completely authenticate tea's supposed origins. It becomes meaningless, in our opinion, to play the game of \u003cem\u003e'don't trust anyone when they tell you they have tea from a certain place, except us of course!'\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe don't do this because we hate you, or because we're trying to obfuscate the quality of the tea to sell it for a higher price, or to be edgy. At the end of the day, the name of the village or mountain and the exact altitude in metres are irrelevant in the face of the tea itself. Chinese white teas such as this are known for their fragrance and sweetness, and the solid storage and age on this tea lends itself well to those aspects. Whilst \u003cem\u003eshoumei\u003c\/em\u003e has less buds than a \u003cem\u003egongmei\u003c\/em\u003e or \u003cem\u003ebaimudan\u003c\/em\u003e grade white tea, the higher proportion of larger leaves means this tea is very robust, and is suitable to many styles of brewing, including \u003cem\u003egongfu\u003c\/em\u003e in a small teapot or \u003cem\u003egaiwan\u003c\/em\u003e, brewed directly in a mug, in a large Western-style teapot, or for being boiled\/simmered in a kettle or on the stove. Depending on how strong you brew the tea, the flavours can range from light and softly sweet and fragrant, to thick and rich, with a smooth and very satisfying honey-like character, hence the name. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAged white teas from Fujian have exploded in popularity in recent years in the Chinese market, and it's increasingly difficult to find teas that were actually aged rather than being processed to mimic age, especially because ageing white tea is a fairly new concept, only being done since around 2011 in any commercial sense. We think this tea is great value, and a perfect introduction to Chinese tea if you're just beginning to explore, or after a solid tea of this style to keep on rotation. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe cakes are 360g, which is the traditional size for tea cakes in China based on Imperial measurements, but a fair bit larger than most of our in-house productions which are normally 200g.
